An interesting fact about August 2010

This August has 5 Sundays, 5 Mondays and 5 Tuesdays, all in 1 month. It happens once in 823 years.

Through The Water Ways

The Creek that is located at the centre of Dubai separates the city into two parts - Deira Dubai (north) and Bur Dubai (south).

Motorized Abra
Crossing the Creek: The quickest (takes under 10 minutes) and cheapest way to get between Deira and Bur Dubai is  by the traditional water transport in the UAE called Abra. There are two types of Abra, one is rowing and the other is motorized. The motorized Abra is a flat-bottomed single engine craft with a capacity of about 20 passengers seated under a canopy. Its operator stands at the center of the hull, steers the vessel using a wheel that is connected to a wooden rudder by a series of ropes and pulleys.

Water bus
Cruising the Creek: To save time and money visiting Dubai's key archaeological and tourist landmarks take the air-conditioned water bus. It offers passengers a quick means of transport to visit these locations and has a capacity to accommodate 36 passengers and the trip takes 45 minutes, with an interval of 15 minutes between services. Tourists and visitors can explore Dubai Creek in one day via the water bus.

Water taxi
Touring Dubai: If you want to leave the Creek and navigate the waters of the Arabian Gulf, take the water taxi. It taxi can seat 11 passengers and 20 per cent of the seats will be dedicated for people with special needs. It has 18 stations along  the Creek and other tourist spots around Dubai including the top hotels like Jumeirah Beach Hotel, Atlantis and Jebel Ali Hotel and Spa.

For My Hijabi Readers

If you are "one of countless Muslim women who every day seek style solutions for your modest dressing needs, looking to drape a fine line between the desire to be stylish while abiding by Islamic traditions", this one's for you.
What better way to make a style statement than to accessorise! Vintage pins and feathered bands are a quick, easy and cheap way to add style to the scarves you already have.
The gather-top shayla makes the cut for its WOW factor. We love the drama created by the scrunched parting and its ultra chic look, which is achieved with minimal effort.

So You Think You Are Cute?

Sometimes, I regret replying to emails. Because, apparently, there are some people that are just so bloody annoying.

One thing, if you bombarded me with questions at your first email, I would let it pass for the sake of your curiosity but sending too many UNNECESSARY smileys??? Remember, you don't know me and I don't know you, so it's freaking annoying.

Another thing, If I replied with 3-5 words, please get the hint and go away.

Lastly, when you go away don't leave me a message telling me that my bug "looks alike me i've eye glass either IT professional always bitten or beaten by bugs same as you hahaha"

Are you okay?

Major Major LOL

After the popularity of Miss Universe 4th runner-up Venus Raj of Philippines and her now famous "Major, Major" answer in the Q&A portion. The hilarious reaction video of her 4 fans posted on YouTube is now a major, major hit on the web. In fact it has over 1.3 million views in 3 days.

It has been going viral not only in social networking sites, but also featured in the news (including a news program in Australia), YouTube vlogger Ray William Johnson talked about it and even Hollywood entertainment blogger Perez Hilton mentioned and described it as "one of the best videos of the summer". Here's what he wrote...
"This video is going to make you want to buy a white t-shirt, crawl into your bed to pray and lose your shit over Miss Philippines!

A group of proud Filipino queens decided to tape themselves watching the Miss Universe pageant. As the tension builds to learn the fate of Miss Philippines, the HIGHlarity ensues. Then, when she makes the top 15, the reaction is priceless!

Ha! Ha! Ha! Amazing!

You MUST watch this video!

You will not regret it!"

Just a warning; do not watch the video if you do not like or hate gays. However, if you want to know why it's "priceless", then you owe it to yourself to find out. Hilarity starts at the 2:28 mark when Miss Philippines was called as the last candidate to make it to the Top 15.

Miss Universe is the "World Cup of gay guys"... Imagine what would they reaction be if Miss Philippines actually WON.

Superstitiousness At Its Best

Bug became an uncle for the second time yesterday. First was a nephew, this time a niece.  So we were talking about the gender while his sister was in the c-section room (as if we were at the waiting area, LOL). We both wanted a niece for him. Maybe because he has already a nephew and we thought it's cute to have a baby girl. He told me that his sister bought everything pinkie although she wasn't sure yet about the baby's gender. And when the sis was asked "what if it's a boy?" She simply replied, "then he will wear pink!"

We ended up talking about silly superstitions -- I started asking him if  his sis looked blooming because  where I come from, blooming/pretty pregnant woman means a baby girl. He said in his country heavy pregnancy  = boy. I asked if she was, he replied "a little". Well, in my homeland if preggers' nape and underarms are darker than normal it is believed she is carrying a boy.

My country has been accustomed to many silly pregnancy superstitions for many years. Some of them that I learned from old folks are:
  1. A preggers, if not given anything she craves, will have a miscarriage.
  2. Seeing or liking or hating a monkey or ugly person or any kind of creature when you are pregnant makes your child looks like them.
  3. Stepping over your husband while he's sleeping can transfer all the unpleasant symptoms of pregnancy.
  4. When a preggers eats a fruit from a tree, the remaining fruits will turn sour.
  5. A preggers will have twins when she eats twin bananas.
  6. If the stomach of a preggers is pointed, she carries a boy; rounded, indicates a girl.
  7. You will either become sleepy or feel drowsy if you share or eat food with a preggers.
  8. Visitors who don't enter the house or stays at the door will cause a preggers a difficult delivery.
  9. If the nipple of the first baby is rounded, next baby is a boy; if it has a division line in the middle (something that resembles a cut or slice) - girl.
Are there any pregnancy superstitions where you come from? Do you believe in any of it?

Don't Assume

Don't assume that because I look well that I feel well. Looks can be very deceiving. Many days I look great but feel terrible.

Don't say, "I know how you feel." No one knows how anyone else feels. We all have varying thresholds of pain, and pain cannot be measured.

Don't tell me about your Aunt Gertrude and her MS [or other illness] and how she managed in spite of it. I am doing the best I can.

Don't tell me, "It could be worse." I don't need to be reminded.

Don't decide what I am capable of doing. Allow me to make those decisions. There may be times I'm wrong, but I'll know soon enough.

Don't be upset that you cannot ease my problems. It won't do any good for both of us to be miserable.

Don't ask me how I feel unless you really want to know. You may hear a lot more than you are prepared to listen to.

Don't assume because I did a certain activity yesterday that I can do it today.

Don't tell me about the latest fad cure. If there is a legitimate treatment, my doctor will let me know.

Do realize I am angry and frustrated with the disease, not with you.

Do let me know you are available to help me when I ask.

Do offer me lots of encouragement.

Do understand why I cancel plans at the last minute. I never know from one day to the next how I will feel.

Do continue to invite me to activities. Just because I am not able to bike ride along with the gang does not mean I can't meet you for the picnic at the end of the trail. Please let me decide. Thanks.

Bitten by the Bug

For the last time, the phrase "bitten by an (Arab) bug" wasn't supposed to be taken literally.

First of all, NO ONE  (or no Arab at that) or NO BUG really bit me.

Lastly, just because I said "bug" doesn't mean Arabs are annoying or they are pests or something. No they are not!

To be bitten by the bug means:
  • to have a sudden strong interest in something.
  • to imply your strong emotional ties or involvement to some activity or interest or hobby; a craze
  • to become very enthusiastic or obsessive about something.
  1. Reenai was bitten by the blogging bug.
  2. Girls of all ages got bitten by the Twilight bug.
  3. The little girl has caught the Justin Bieber bug and wants to talk to him on the phone.
Are we clear on this now? bug

Am I A Polyglot?

I am fascinated with language. When I was younger, I always watched international beauty pageants like Miss Universe and Miss World, not because I wanted to be a beauty queen but because I wanted to be an interpreter for non-native English speaking participants. I always think those interpreters are really really really cool.

Foreign languages are my frustration. Aside from my country's official languages --  both my native tongue (one of the Austronesian languages) and English (as part of the normal school curriculum from preschool to college in my home country), I can speak and understand (just a little) three to five foreign languages: Spanish, French, Japanese, Arabic and Hindi.

Itchy Bitchy

Have you ever had a happy moment where you could just say that no matter what happens, NO ONE can take  this away from me... And then, someone does!!!

It's amazing how a real world -- no glass shoe, no seven dwarfs -- but there's always someone who wants and will try to ruin your happiness. This someone is definitely the long lost sister of the wicked sisters! And I'm totally convinced.

Teach me how to drive and I cruise for a lifetime.

Today's confession:  I cannot drive and probably will not drive (?) because I am otherwise scared (?).. LOL.  I never had a driver's license. I need one so I can drive myself around. I don't need someone to drive me always or take a taxi or a bus.

Why didn't I just get a license at 16 like everybody else? I don't know, it didn't really occur to me until now.

This is the problem when we don't know which is which. I mean, have you ever received an email or emails showing pictures about the "extravagant" lifestyle of the "greedy, oil-rich" Arab sheikhs telling us - the public - why fuel prices continue to shoot up?!

Here's one of those e-mails saying "The House Oil Built"..

Stuff That Few People Have Ever Seen

The "Arab-obsessed" (me).. hahaha.. is into Anthony Bourdain: No Reservations travel and food TV show. I've checked if he had been to Middle East and found out that some 2 years ago he explored the cuisine, culture and heritage of Saudi Arabia.

Hmmm... I want to go to Jeddah (it looks cool there) and  meet Danya Alhamrani. Here's the "FAN-atic" episode, enjoy :)
